It was a nice Saturday morning in April. We decided to go out by boat in Playa del Carmen with Niko and JS. That means serious diving in the water and can’t stop laughing on the boat.
When I started spearfishing in Cozumel years ago, it was common to see Greater Amberjack in areas that are around 25 ft/7.6mtr. So even beginners were able to shoot Amberjack. Though Playa del Carmen is very nearby, Amberjack has a different behavior over there. We see them less. Mainly because they stay in the deep.
This Saturday we geared up and wanted to drift in a “pretty deep” area for us, a “pretty shallow” area for Amberjack. After a couple of minutes in the water I thought I saw a fat HE Jack, simply because I did not expect to see Amberjack at this spot. Prepared my dive and went down. Almost immediately I saw I was wrong. Yellow… Black stripe….Amberjack. What the %&/$”… this dive must be successful. I went down to 85ft/23 meters and the Amberjack stayed calm. I did not move and the current took me straight to the Amberjack, I did not have to move at all to get close to it. It feels like you launch yourself and you are in the right track to get where you wanna be. It was a simple shot, a simple fight, but a memory that will last.
