It was a beautiful morning in Cozumel. I found my self spearfishing with my very good friend Bill and 3 more guests. First spot, we got a few triggers…nice fish to warm up a little bit I would say. We later moved on to our second spot of the day drifting with a quite strong current, visibility was really nice though…saw a couple of snappers swimming through the ledge but they wouldn’t give us the chance to get close enough for a shot so we just appreciate their presence and think “I’ll see you soon don’t worry hihi…”
So we keep on going, Bill who was buddying up with me at that moment took a long dive, then on the way back up he sees a HUGE barracuda lying on the sand and start pointing it at me, I rapidly take the gun and immediately dive down trying to make it on time considering the strong current…in conditions like that you wanna dive down a couple of feet before the target so on your way to the fish you can end up before or on top of it, never behind though swimming against the current is not an option. I’m now going down as fast as I can so I can “freeze my self” the last feet when getting closer to the Barracuda and not make any brusque movement that could scare the fish away…it’s a big one and I’m on time! bam! excellent shot to the head but I guess the spear eluded the brain or as Bill said they must have a very tiny brain because she started to give a hard fight and being really aggressive, even so, I start pulling up the line to bring the fish to the surface when she starts swimming in circles and coming straight at me with a big OPEN mouth! aiming to my face, looking pretty much like a Pac Man, I can see those big teeth wanting to get a piece of my nose so I push the spear away from me before I need plastic surgery for a facial reconstruction haha. Finally she calms down a little bit and I’m now able to grab it from the tail and the spear to get it on the boat…wow I have to admit it my heart beat strongly… and that, was quite interesting…next time I’ll wait a little until I bring it up to the surface hihi See you soon fellows!! On the picture you see Bill imitating my barracuda… miss you my friend!!!
