After spearfishing for a while Leo decided to explore a new spot close to the drop off north of Playa del Carmen….sounds good to me! Let’s do it! We arrived, threw the buoy and jumped in! ready to explore new horizons with that adventurous spirit/ feeling that runs through our bodies and feed our souls…(wow that was deep haha)
We made numerous dives, saw a lot of fish… Big Snappers in schools, nice Permits and Groupers on the bottom…finally, the magic happens, I can see it, yes, it is right there lying at the bottom a couple of feet into my left, it’s a Black Grouper looks like a nice size and I believe I’m on time to get it calculating the depth and current so I move quickly swim towards him take a deep breath and go! Diving down now…10, 30, 40 feet, I can feel the current is taking me out of range little by little but I keep kicking hard trying to maintain my ascent straight, 45 feet… I’m getting closer, it already saw me by now and decides to make a left turn in his attempt to swim away from me…Im fighting against the current and I get to the critical moment/seconds of “what should I do?” get closer? Take my shot? Am I to far away? Will the spear go all the way through?
It just made his (final) left turn and I made my decision, Im shooting right NOW BAM! To be honest I thought I missed it, it was a really uncomfortable and long distance shot… Luckily I immediately felt it strongly pulls out of my hands my speargun with an amazing strength, Yesssss!!!!! I hit it! not a good shot though, I hit it in the lower body part… I started going back up and I can see Leo swimming fast toward the float which is underwater! He retrieved it and started pulling up the rope… Im now back at the surface and I tell Leo I’m afraid we might lose it because it wasn’t a clean shot so I ask him to give a second shot ASAP! So he dives down and gives a perfect and clean second shot right into the head! Excellent job we now officially GOT IT!!!!!!!! OOOOH YEAHHHH!!!!!! I notice that captain Manuel and our assistant Negro cant wait to see our catch… Leo brings it up to the surface WOW! I just cant believe how BIG IS THAT THING!!!! I never realized how huge was that Grouper when I was down there, its amazing, a BEAST! Just take a look of the picture I’m speechless! That was definitely one of our biggest Grouper ever and of course one of those days we will never ever forget! Picture time (our Playa crew) and fresh grouper for everyone!!! Oh Yeah!
