Anibal here again with a great adventure we had this week in Cozumel. This is one of those stories you will keep on telling over and over again. Getting your fish on the boat is not always that easy and it involves a lot of extra work in some cases.
Like today. A day where all conditions looked perfect to get an easy catch. Nice visibility, calm ocean, not too much current. In one of my favorite reefs I have seen a Snapper around for about a month. It´s a smart one. Together with guests, we tried to get it. But until today we failed. We always found another excuse. Too much current, bad visibility, etc. haha. Past weeks when I saw it it started to hide as soon as we were just thinking of diving down. I went down sooo many times to look for it and other guests as well… Challenging and fun!
Today I was able to follow the Snapper. Together with our guest and good friend JS. We followed the Snapper and dove down multiple times at several spots close to each other. Depths 45-50ft. All according to our “buddy system”, 1 up 1 down. When JS got back on the surface only one hiding spot was left. I knew this must be the lucky dive. I went down to the small cave and shot it. We got it! YES!!! Que bueno. I had to leave my gun on the bottom as the Snapper and the spear got stuck in the cave. We had to dive down various times to get it.
Finally JS was able to release our lunch. Thank you JS! In this reef there are many other species swimming around. Other Snappers, Groupers, Barracuda. This fish was on the wish list for a long time. This is what I think is so great about spearfishing. It´s not the quantity of fish we shoot that makes us happy. We could have gotten a lot of other fishes that day. But we specifically wanted this one and we went for it.
