Spearfishing is not about competition for me. I enjoy it for myself and I enjoy seeing other people have fun etc. BUT sometimes we have the opportunity to do things which are rare… and we see RECORD size fish.
I shot this fish on a dive from shore while approximately 10ft below the surface! I was getting ready to stop diving for the day and it just happened to swim by… lucky me. The shot was very secure, but during the struggle to secure the fish the line tore through some flesh and some of the insides came out (sorry… some may say gross…not me.
I finally was able to get the fish to shore and I was very excited to see this out of the water. Wow! Very big. BUT… remember… I am not fishing on a boat so now I must walk back to my car with this fish and all my gear… my day has just began. And the walk is approximately 1 1/2 miles! The things we do for the sport we love!
Also, the walk takes nearly twice as long because people keep asking me to take pictures with me… and with the fish! So, if you see this fish in other people’s pictures, you know who shot it!!
Normally I don’t even consider that things I do are “special” or “records” so when I weighed the fish I was just doing it for my own curiosity. it came out to juuuust over 28lbs. I thought “Well, that is cool.” but that was it. I moved on with preparing the fish to be cooked.
Several weeks later I checked a site on record size catches for people around Puerto Rico… and to my surprise… this fish was 3 lbs more than the previous record!!! Wow!!! I had no idea!!! The previous record was 25.2 lbs…. and as you can see from the scale… this one was over 28lbs and the guts are out.
I have submitted the information, but I’m not sure it will be counted because of some minor details. We shall see.
So, in case you shoot a fish which is REALLY big and you think you may have a record, here are some things to keep in mind:
– Get a picture of everything!
-A full picture with you and the WHOLE fish.
-A picture of you weighing the WHOLE fish
-A picture of you measuring the length and width of the fish.
Here are the full rules to document your catches:
Hopefully we get some more records out there!!
For me, either way, I know it was a record and it was great day.
