Its January and David reserved a day of extreme spearfishing with us and extreme it became in many ways. As his plane arrived late in Cancun on Thursday, he missed the last ferry to Holbox, our newest spearfishing location. David, pretty determined guy, paid a local fisherman a nice fee and after midnight he arrived on Holbox.
David travels with his gun in a black case, looking like a hit man straight from the movies. Though his pink shorts with drawings of fishes will confuse you, haha. So picture him arriving very late and asking some fishermen to take him over. Jaja… After a couple of hours of sleep, he must have thought we had the worst over with, “thank god its Friday.”
Wrong. Waves were high, 5 knots current and visibility less than 1 meter. Circumstances you prefer to be on the beach in your hammock with a good book. But hey…. we are in the middle of the ocean anyway, so better make the best of it.
We drove to a shipwreck at 30 meters of depth that normally holds good fish at all depths. Well, our GPS said the shipwreck should be there, hard to tell with visibility less than 1 meter. Together with his buddy we dropped David into the water. They sit on the edge of the boat while we approach the shipwreck. Then the captain counts off. 5….. 4….. 3….. 2…. 1…. JUMP.
The trick is to dive down immediately…. into the dark, not seeing anything, hang around a bit lets say at 10 meters and then hopefully a fish comes towards you… and that’s what David did. He jumped and dove down immediately. When he came up, he was screaming out loud “oooh yeah man yahooooooooooo”. He shot his first Amberjack. David: Congratulations! You did “extremely” well.
