Is spearfishing for women? Oooh yes it is!!! My Guests Sylvia (f) and Dixie (m) joined us today to go spearfishing in Cancun Mexico. A classic spearfishing day with a successful female beginner.
We drive to a spearfishing spot, located in our GPS about 5 months ago whilst searching for reefs and wrecks. It’s one of our beginner spots for spearfishing in Cancun situated a bit North of Isla Mujeres.
Briefing done, time to gear up; everybody ready to get in the water and captain Pedro drops us off just to the side of the reef not to disturb the fish and we swim in silently…..the hunt is on. Looking up and back over my guests, Cancun is a dot in the distance, we have come far for this, so we better not return empty handed.
As they work in the buddy system watching them from the front Sylvia dives down to around 10m-12m, that is about 35ft, I can not believe my eyes. It goes to show what can happen when you put your mind to it as a beginner. In e-mails and conversations before, I could tell she was focused and she has just shown the boys how it was done. Amazing!
With the current we are able to drift along the edge of the reef at around 8-14m. We see Mutton Snapper, Grouper, Turtle, Permit, Lobster, but nothing is working for us at the moment in time and the good opportunities are not big enough to shoot.. After diving for almost an hour we take a break, take on some water and I give Sylvia and Dixie a recap on diving and hunting with the current and checking under every part of the reef for life. Their focus is back in their eyes and a competitive spearfishing couple has entered the boat.
We are in the water around 10m deep, amazing visibility, HD Fishing or something chesty like that, and Sylvia is diving in the corner of my eye into a school of Barracuda. She dives down and rests on a ledge of the reef; picks out the largest, tracks it and takes her shot, yeah she got it! Of course she did, It shudders on the end of the shaft as she swims back up. Me and Dixie are so excited for her.
We spend another hour on the hunt to have some close shaves with some big Grouper and some Snapper, but we didn’t have much luck but the ambition for a first timer to want to be chasing Grouper, It is like music to my ears.
What a memory they have, I am sure they will not forget spearfishing today for a long time.
Today showed me that it doesn’t matter what level of fitness or mentality you have; you really can do anything if you put your mind to it and have the belief you want to do it. Happy Honey Moon Sylvia and Dixie, Good luck in New York, and thank you for the amazing memories.
So to all women out there that want to give spearfishing a try. To become a successful beginner, come to Cancun. Happy Fishing!
