The last month of April, Queens day in Holland. Kids day in Mexico. And simply a great spearfishing day for us. I went out with Kaj in Playa del Carmen. We rescheduled the trip to the afternoon as in the morning the visibility was not that great. And ooh my… we did that for a reason apparently… Kaj and I had a great talk and and it was a ´lovely´afternoon. When we hit the waters it was pleasant to find out that there was hardly any current. We shot a Barracuda. Dinner was there, so highest pressure gone, hihi. Then we shot a nice Permit, but on the way up to the surface uff… the tip of the spear did not hold the fight and we lost the wounded fish. It happens once and a while but it is always hard… We decided to take a break. Have a water and eat a banana. Yes ladies and gentlemen. We do have bananas on the boat. We are fishermen of a new generation. Haha. And even with bananas on the boat we are able to get gooooood fish. So here we are.. full of energy. Ready for the next spot. And that became a memorable one…
I see underneath me a small yellow reef fish moving nervously… not normal behavior at all… so i prepare for a dive to check it out… At about 20ft I was able to see what was going on. 2 big Permits relaxing and the yellow reef fish above them swimming fast in circles…. When I came closer I decided to go for the bigger one of the 2. Why not, hahaha. I ended straight on top of them and had no angle to shoot. I did not wanna move myself to avoid scaring them… So while hanging on top of them and waiting for the right moment I realized that when I hit the big one I should be ready for a big fight… as well being ready for no sleep tonight… it all went fast. The 2 Permits started to move. I turned sideways to my left and pulled the trigger. Woooooooooow I got it I got I got it. The Permit went up to the surface like a madman.. So I thought.. easy. But I was so wrong. After going up it went down to the bottom dragging down happy Leo with it… jajaja. Not exactly “fly me to the moon”.. I tried fighting against it…. but lost. I let go of my gun and decided to go back to the surface. I did use my float line though…. the Permit went into a space on the bottom and went out on the other side. So at that moment the forecast was…. making dives to 85ft to get my gear and hopefully the fish… Though we got lucky… The Permit swam back the way it entered end ended up in the open water like us. YEAH! You need to have some luck now and then hihi. On the boat Manuel (our captain), Negro (our assistant) and I discussed we might have a record fish here. So we called our head office and got transferred to Rodrigo. He checked. the record is 47.5 pounds… Our catch turned out to be 44 pounds… So basically I should have waited until the Permit had finished its lunch… Back on land ´some´people came to check out our catch. Negro took the opportunity to impress las chicas with our catch. Boys will be boy, will be boys…. GREAT afternoon!
Kaj, Negro, Manuel and Rodrigo: gracias!!!!
