Spearfishing in Cancun: Big Black Grouper vs Cobia vs Chanoc

“Ooooh my”… Just before this Norte came in we did a Spearfishing Trip out of Cancun that became quite the Adventure. The hunt was for a BIG Black Grouper. A Spearfishing Adventure in the category “Don´t try this at home”.

Last days of January. A Spearfishing Trip with one experienced client, Carl, out of Cancun. To depart from multiple locations is such a blessing. Different surroundings, different adventures, just great. The client was comfortable up to 60ft so we were able to offer him a decent amount of very interesting spots in the Cancun area.

Spearfishing in Cancun is amazing: https://spearfishingtoday.com/services/spearfishing-cancun-mexico/

It was a good day of Spearfishing. We saw beautiful sealife: huge sea turtles, dolphins and a big group of Spotted Eagle Rays.

I guided my client of today into a 35 pound Cubera Snapper and he was able to spear it! BANG! So his mission was accomplished. Spearfishing a nice Cubera was on his bucket list, so he was super, super happy! Well done Carl!

While on the way back I asked him if was in a hurry. He said no… “the mrs is in a Spa in Cancun all day…” So we decided to throw in an extra spot, a spot unknown by other fishermen and that we have called “Punta Today”. Depth is 70ft. And that is basically where the “off the record” adventure started.

This Spearfishing spot in Cancun is a platform with caves. Visibility was very poor, even greenish with stirred up sand. I went down and could hardly see anything. Made it to the bottom and just laid down. About 100 Mutton Snappers and Mangrove Snappers of a more than decent size circling around me. What a beautiful scenery!! They came out of nowhere. Though my hunting instinct got triggered by “someone” watching me all the way from the back of the school of Snappers. A Big Black Grouper. My estimate: about 90 to 100 pounds. I went up and told Carl. He went down and shot a very nice Dog Snapper, well done. He had not seen the Grouper. I went down again and could not see it either. Carl suggested to go back on the boat and go back to Cancun. I said (my famous, jeje) words “one last dive. I went down did not see the Grouper, but I definitely could hear him. It was about time to get up to get air, but I stayed. The last dive you know…

That paid off. I heard a sound at 1 o´clock. And moved to 9 o´clock to anticipate without seeing the Big Black. And suddenly “ooooh my”,.. there it was. BANG. Got it. For sure the biggest Black I ever shot. I fought and fought to avoid it would go into a cave, but lost that fight. I got up and Carl said “Don´t tell me you got it Chanoc”. Well yes…. I asked him to please help me get it out of the cave. He went down, got back up and reported he could see the Grouper (f$”&”/ big) and he was able to pull the shaft. But no luck getting the Grouper out.

I went down and tried the same. No luck. When I went up I saw a huge Cobia passing by. Wow. Interesting.

Carl told me he would not be able to go all the way down again to fight the fish, too tired, but would prefer to cover my back in case needed. OK!
The plan was to give the Grouper a kill shot with Carl´s gun, to be able to get the Grouper out of the cave. So I took my time and dove down. Spearfishing in Cancun will never be the same… On the way down pieces of white meat were floating around. Now…. this all happens in a couple of seconds. My first thought was the Grouper is trying to get out by himself, meat is there as he is hurt. But then… I dive deeper and see the shaft out of the cave without the Grouper. What the %”$”&· happened here? Next thing I see a big chunk of my (!) Grouper in the cave and the Cobia that I saw before with the rest of the Big Black in its mouth passing by.

I had never ever seen a Cobia eating a Grouper. But even more surprised I was how a Cobia could eat a meal THAT big. Instead of shooting the Cobia I did nothing. Nothing at all. I just watched the scene. I was in shock…..

Went back up and Carl had seen a shadow passing by that he could not identity. That was so logical as it was a fish with a big fish in its mouth…

My client Carl kept the fish of his Spearfishing Adventure in Cancun in the freezer of his condo he rented and has food for the rest of the week; our memories (Big Black Grouper vs Cobia vs Chanoc) will last for ever, the bended shaft I will find another use for…
