Shawn is a great guy and his whole family spearfishes (hihi). When they visited Playa del Carmen last week, we just had to go out spearfishing. Shawn´s dad told me back home they have to go out for more than 40 miles to get to 45ft of water of calm water and then they can use scuba tanks to spear some dinner. Well uhhh that is a bit different here. We can stay very close to shore. We can NOT use scuba gear and we have “some” current. Ooh and before I forget, I always have bananas on the boat (ha ha ha ha).
We started at one of my favorite spots with depths of 20/25 ft, very easy with no current BUT many hiding spots for fishes. Good chance for Snapper, Grouper and Horse Eye Jacks. We saw various Groupers, but no luck. Then we moved to a deeper area where we saw many many many Permits, and some barracudas and Horse Eye Jack. We were able to get two in the boat and we have it all on video. Que bueno!
We ended the trip with a smooth drift along a 25/30ft coral area. We saw some lobsters, but they were too small to shoot. Also, a couple of turtles came to say hi (hi hi). All and all a great morning and some great fish. For Shawn and his family a great new experience to see the difference of another area and to spearfish without a tank. As Shawn´s dad said “I already respected those freedivers, but after doing it myself, I respect them even more”. Hope to see you back one day amigos!!!
