“When you’re in the water freediving, nothing else exists but the present,” explains Pamela.
“The simple fact of just living the moment, being in the now, and to feel yourself, your entire body, your entire being, and to be conscious of that.”
“It’s the purest form of being of feeling, of living,” she continues.
“It’s the opportunity to get to know yourself, to feel your heart, to listen to your pulse while at the same time holding out knowing that it’s just a sensation.”
Pamela, of course, is Pamela Castellanos, one of our cherished and highly talented guides at Spearfishing Today. Recently, Pamela successfully completed her certification as a PADIfreedive instructor (insert applause).
As part of the activities held today as part of PADI Women’s Dive Day 2017, held in celebration of International Women’s Day, we asked Pamela to share her thoughts about the art of freediving and how it changed her life.
The result is a love letter to the sport of freediving.
Freediving and Spearfishing are getting more and more popular which is great; some recent developments made me write this guide about Choosing Selecting the Right Spearfishing Freediving Charter. How to Choose Select the Spearfishing Freediving Charter that is good for you?
More and more people like to Spearfish while Freediving. As we predicted a couple of years ago. It was waiting for accidents to happen. Both Spearfishing and Freediving are AWESOME, but on the same hand they can be dangerous as well.
We think it is weird that anyone can just buy a Speargun and goes hunting. We think it is weird people just go into the ocean and hold their breath, without any idea how Freediving works.
DAN is well known for Scuba diving Accident Coverage Insurance; did you know that Freediving and Spearfishing could be covered by DAN as well?
The team of SpearfishingToday is fully covered by DAN while Freediving and Spearfishing.
Laura Johnson, DAN representative in Mexico is super enthusiastic and knowledgeable: “Many divers ask us what type of diving activities are included in the DAN coverage. Ultimately it depends on which coverage you’ve purchased, but many of DAN’s policies do offer coverage for Freediving and Spearfishing activities. In the DAN World and DAN America regions, several of the coverage plans offered will cover Freedivers while participating in or teaching courses, recreational practice, and non-record or non-competition Freediving activities. However, the policy makes it clear that record attempts or competition is not covered.”
PADI, the well known Scuba institution, now offers 3 different Freediving Courses to become a good and safe Freediver; SpearfishingToday offers each Course in Mexico: Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and in Cancun. When you always wanted to learn how to Freedive, then there no more excuses. Beginning with the PADI Freediver certification, you will gain the training and discipline needed to stay safe during breath hold dives. Afterwards, you can continue your education and progress to new depths with the PADI Advanced Freediver Course and Master Freediver Course.
3 things that really make the PADI Freediving courses stand out.
We are fortunate to meet interesting people from all over the world. Among them are people with no spearfishing experience, but also professionals. People that are famous and people that are not. People financially free and people that have saved months to join us on a trip. Whoever you are… when you go out freediving with us, we will talk about freediving safety and you will have to accept our buddy system supervision.
You only live once. At least that is what we believe. So we take your safety very seriously. We are all FII certified freedivers and have many years of freediving experience, “been there, done that”.
Our safety track record is clean. In six years we have done spearfishing and freediving charters, we have had zero accidents. As well as zero blacking outs among our guests.
