Watching the bottom while freediving is like watching the neighborhood while driving your car or riding your bike. Each neighborhood has its own price range, its own style, its own views and its own energy and that attracts the same kind of people. It is also so in the ocean. Spanish Mackerel likes a wide view. Grouper like a place with a big backyard. Hogfish like a friendly area, some sand, some coral and some other fishes to talk to. It is great to look down and recognize the neighborhood you´re snorkeling in, so you can prepare what to hunt for.
Yesterday, we went to an area where Margates and Hogfish hang out. Without seeing any shootable fish I dove down and moved smoothly for a while about 2 ft above the bottom. At 20ft of depth, I saw nice coral formations, lots of colorful fish and there it was… Dinner. Hogfish is “pretty easy” to get if you can find it and is really delicious. So far I only tried it grilled, until yesterday. Hogfish cooked in lime, some orange and all together in a nice composition. Provecho.
