I never ever had this experience before. Last weekend we were spearfishing in the middle of the ocean, far away from any land. Looking for fish. It is so different from spearfishing the reefs. It is less hunting in the water. The captain is super import in finding fish. Dropping in the water at the right time can give you a chance or not. So what do we normally do to find fish? We use our eyes.
Looking for birds, looking for trees and trash in the ocean and looking for dark spots moving in the blue…. Oh and in the blue we look at a fish finder as well, haha. This weekend we found a new way of finding fish. We used our nose to find fish.
So picture us sitting and standing on a boat. Looking, looking, looking around us. When suddenly I smell fish. I thought “it can’t be”, its an illusion. Like when you’re in the desert, you want water and suddenly you see an oasis in front of you. But seriously, I did smell fish. I decided to keep my mouth shut. The others would say I am crazy.
I carefully approached the captain. I asked him a neutral question. “Do you smell that?”. He looked at me, sucked in some air and then his eyes became big. Oooh yeah… we smell fish, we found oil, hahahaha. Great nose job, Leo, hahaha. The smell became more intense and then we saw it, wow… just amazing. About 50 meters in front of us there were some two meter high waves. Right inside those waves there were like thousands of big silver fishes, rolling along with the waves, right underneath the surface. Never have I seen or smelled anything like that. Right in front of us was a huge wave with thousands of good fishes in it. Well, we got ready and got some nice Jurel (that is the silverfish one on the picture).
