Victor was here together with Nick and some friends and family. They decided not be lazy on a Friday afternoon and to go spearfishing with us in Playa del Carmen. It turned out to be a very interesting afternoon. Nick and the gang learned a lot about underwater hunting and I learned a lot of new slang (thank you guys hihi).
After everybody got pretty comfortable in the water we decided to go for the real stuff. I took them to 90ft of water. “Why would you take novices to 90ft of water to spearfish?”. The answer is simple. Some fish like Mackerel, Rainbowrunner and MahiMahi cruise in deeper waters at 20/25 ft. We did the deeper spot two times without any result. We took a break and agreed to do it one more time and oooh yeahhh that was a good decision. While we were drifting Victor saw something silvery moving right of him. He did not hesitate and dove down about 15ft. There were three Rainbowrunners approaching him. He stayed calm, aimed for one and got one. Simple as that. I think that back at the hotel they could hear him screaming “Hey, I got one, hey did you see that? heeeeeey I got one man, no &/·/%”/$%)” /&·/% way. I got one”. Good tasting fish and not the easiest to shoot either. Victor became Victory. Proud of you!!!
People often ask me. “Leo, do people really shoot fish the first time they go spearfishing?” The answer is yes. First you need to have a good instructor/guide (huhummmm spearfishingtoday.com hihi). Then with good focus, some luck and mother nature cooperating for sure you have a fair chance, even the first time.
