Sunday morning, Riviera Maya. The sun rises and we get on the boat. Moving to a spot we only visit twice a year or so.
It´s the week after the Winter Olympics. While reading a bit of preparations of the sportsmen and women, I was thinking that top sport can be super addictive, and I thought “no es amor, es un obsession”, haha. Where did the love go for what you are doing?
Not that I wanna compare us with Olympic spotters, but I do recognize the drive for getting better and improving. I do not like spearfishing competitions, though I am pretty competitive with myself. We are in the water a lot to spear dinner, to teach people how to spear and to take experienced spearos to amazing depths to look for bigggggggg fish.
I remember when I started spearfishing. I could not sleep at night. At 6am in the morning, I was in the ocean training. In the afternoon, I was back in the ocean learning about fish behavior. I went so far that I gave rocks a name… I had maps of reefs in my mind. Was it an obsession? Well… I think it was. Though with a BIG smile. And lots of happiness.
So now I am playing around with my pole spear and I recognize to have that same feeling again. That inside energy to improve myself training with my polespear. I wanna get better and better. So on the day of rest, what do I do… in the water to get some Sunday lunch. Me, myself and I… and the polespear. Es amor…
I shot this Jack at 22.8 meters. I was on the bottom just waiting for fish. When two Crevall Jacks passed by and came back to check me out. One of them should not have done that… A nice shot with the pole spear behind the gills and a easy way up to the surface.
