One of the nicest things of spearfishing in the deep blue is the surprise element. You think it is just blue, blue and more blue. And then out of nowhere some Jacks, followed by a couple of Rainbow runners (in season those are followed by a shark, haha).
I took this picture this week while hunting for Wahoo in Playa del Carmen. Medium sized Rainbow runners (about 25/30 centimeters), but one is staying behind that was about 45 centimeters long, meaning: GAME ON.
With Rainbow runners over here, you get only one decent chance. If you hesitate, game over. When you see them coming, you dive down in all calm, just relax and hang out. Then the Rainbow runners will come to you it being the very, very curious fish it is. And then it is up to you. You pick the one you want and just wait and wait till that one is close enough and gives you the right angle to make a shot.
P.S. The biggest did not get into polespear range, so no Rainbow Runner for dinner today.
