It´s a regular Wednesday and we planned a trip in Playa del Carmen with Jon and his two daughters. Jon went out with us before in Cozumel and this year he wanted to give it a try in Playa del Carmen together with his daughters. What a GREAT afternoon we had. Nice drive, decent briefing and we hit the water.
At the first spot, we did see some smaller fish and came back with no food. When we were all on the boat, Jon said out loud “Wow… my daughter is a mermaid”. Hahahaha. Nice surprise Jon, hahaha.
We were able to get a Triggerfish and a Rainbowrunner and we lost a big “gordo” Pemit. For sure more than 45 pounds. I shot it and let my float line do the rest but this Permit dragged my float down (excuse me?!?! A permit that drags my 2atm float down. Yes it did.) and because of the tension on both ends, the spear got out of the fish. Should I have put a bungy between my float and my float line? Yes, I should have… maybe next time. I hope you had a great dinner with your mermaids, Jon!

It´s good to follow your feelings. Last week, we went out with David. After a couple of misses, I saw him getting “pretty pissed” at himself. Uff. We all know the feeling. You get close to the fish. Some times your shot is just bad. Some times the fish turns just when you shoot. Some times you get distracted by another bigger fish. It all happens. But at a certain point when you have been close to get some dinner on your spear, you really wanna end up with a fish at the end of the trip.
David and I were in a deep area where we regularly see schools of fishes close to the surface, usually some Horse Eye Jacks and Rainbowrunners. We did not have any luck that day so I decided to go back on the boat. “Ok Ok” David said, let me do one more dive. When he came up from that dive, out of nowhere a school of Rainbowrunners was there. David dove again and took a shot and missed… nooo way. I quickly reloaded his gun and the Rainbowrunners were still underneath us. David dove down again to about 15 ft (while snorkeling in 100ft of water). This time he concentrated well and got a delicious Rainbowrunner.
David: well done. You did not give up and got what you came for! See you next time amigo.

p.s. Nice touch David, the blood on your forehead.
