Besides fantastic water activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing and spearfishing (jaja), Cozumel is also famous for its Sea Turtle Salvation Program. Rafael and Ricardo of the Cozumel Ecology department are doing an amazing job to make sure lots baby sea turtles will be born and are released each year. Unfortunately a lot of new born sea turtles won’t survive because of drowning or being eaten by birds.
This week we saw something that we honestly never had seen before. Anibal caught a nice size barracuda in the blue waters on the west side of the island. Back in the harbor he cleaned the fish and discovered a little turtle in the stomach of the Barracuda… and another one, and another one, and another one. More than twenty little sea turtles were eaten by the Barracuda. Wow, we were all impressed/shocked/speechless. Of course, this is how nature works but this view caused a double feeling. On one hand you see the program being very effective and on the other hand you find this Barracuda with its stomach full.
Rafael and Ricardo started a Facebook page with all the info you need about the Sea Turtle Salvation Program. Go and check it out to join a turtle release, to get some education or to make a donation (uhh… Did I already say that these 2 guys really do an AMAZING job…).
