We had an interesting guest on the last days of August in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. In his spare time, this guy runs spearoblog.com. A lot of energy and interesting questions from San Diego through e-mail. Nice to meet you Roman!
We meet the last Wednesday in August. Pretty rough ocean and so-so visibility; great spearfishing conditions (ha ha). Sharing stories and experiences is always fun… comparing water temperature, visibility, fishes and more. Before we knew it, we reached the first spot. I briefed Roman on how I work in the water. We were each others buddies for the next couple of hours and we will stay like that for much longer. However, we did not know that at that time.
It turned out to be a very memorable trip. We spotted Black Grouper and Cubera Snapper. Very nice. After I shot some food for dinner, Roman got a chance that is pretty rare. We were basically drifting in 100ft of water. No reefs, no nothing. I saw two Horse Eye Jacks on our right side, swimming at around 2 feet. Yes, 2 feet. When I turned left to Roman, he had spotted them as well and knocked on my shoulder. “Yes amigo, you can shoot those,” I signaled him. Without hesitation, Roman shot 1 of the Horse Eye Jacks. WITHOUT DIVING. Wooooooooow. Really…. are you always that lucky Mr. Spearoblog? Or is it because of the bananas in the cooler?
Back on the boat, we screamed and yelled like girls. This was pretty exciting. YEAHHHHHHHH. The trip continued; beautiful sealife, great freediving, great buddies. I decided to call it a day and told Roman “one last dive and then we go.” Roman went down and touched the bottom at around 30 ft. He spots a very nice Snapper; aims, pulls the trigger and wow what a great long shot. He got himself another fish. Thank you Roman! GREAT trip! Leo
