Our crew and guides are trained in emergency situations, of course. We also have signals we use among each other. One of them is the signal for sharks. Just in case…. you know.
Yesterday, I was in the ocean, in the blue water with Tim, Jon and Jon´s daughters. While the daughters stayed on the boat, Jon and I were in the water together with Tim. We were about to get back on the boat when captain Manuel gave me the shark signal.
Half of Tim´s body was hanging on the boat when Manuel shouted at us “swim, swim, that way, quick.” I thought what is going on, but I fully trust Manuel, so I grabbed Tim and pulled him back in the water. The first thing we saw was a huge tale, a shark tale. Oooh my… But then we realized it was a peaceful, calm swimming Whaleshark. Not the biggest one you can imagine, but still very impressive with a length of about 24 ft. Tim dove down and used the GoPro to make some footage.
Jon was full of energy. He asked me “how often does this happen, Leo?”. Well… actually this is the first time in 5 years, Jon….” Isn’t the ocean fantastic? It is just like life. Great things happen when you don’t expect them. Amazing.
